Elves
Elves are an immortal, magical race. They can only be killed by wounds, poison or a serious illness. They are considered a beautiful race, but can magically alter their appearance if they so choose. Living forever, they tend to master their trades. Having magic, they can easily accomplish most tasks and they search for something to bring meaning to their life. They are faster and stronger than humans, having a natural agility. Elves originally created the Dragon Rider spell.
Dwarves
Dwarves are a short race, living in cities under the Beor Mountains. Thy have a long life-span, although not immortal. The dwarf race is divided into thirteen clans and the overall leader is a king or queen, who is elected in. Their king or queen will wield the hammer weapon Volund. Dwarves are short, standing around waist-high to humans, barely reaching their elbows. They have seven toes on each foot. They are lovers of rock and stone, believing their god created them from the roots of the mountains. They possess magical abilities, but are not seen often using it. They were not originally included in the Rider Spell, but after the war they were added into it.
Humans
Humans came to Alagaësia for a visit to Surda and then left. Years later, under King Planacar, they sailed again, landing near Tierm, an elvish city. They were offered their choice of the unclaimed land. They now dwell in the Empire and Surda, having forced the other species out during the reign of Galbatorix. With the war over, the other species are welcome again, but it still remains a mainly human land. Humans are a mortal race, but they can learn magic if they have a strong mind. They can also learn to fight with their mind. Often times humans rely on spirits to use magic and if they do, they can be at risk of turning into a Shade, should the spirits overtake them. They were included in the Rider Spell shortly after they arrived.
Urgals
Urgals are considered an ugly and evil race, or they were. Now they are mainly just ugly. They are 6 to 9 feet tall. They have greyish skin, thick arms and bowed legs. Their eyes are yellow and piglike and they have seven toes on each foot, like dwarves. They have the same lifespan as a human would. Unlike humans, they are faster and stronger. Their hands feature claws and they have horns on their heads. They are also capable of using magic. Their language is simple, but not many outsiders know it. The largest Urgals are known as Kull** and they stand above 8 feet. They live in tribes and Urgal women, dams, care well for their children. The tribe leader, or war chief, will be called Nar. They were included in the Rider Spell after the war.
Riders**
Riders of any race, will automatically have some gifts when they bond with their dragon. Among these are immortality. They cannot die of age; only weapon or poison can kill them. They will have magical power and a mind capable of communicating with other minds or fighting with their mind. Riders are given swords when they complete their training. The sword will be the colour of their dragon, with a gem in the hilt. Training would take many years for most pairs. A Rider’s magic will also tend to be the same colour as the scales of their dragon.
Dragons**
The egg of a dragon will more often than not be the colour of the dragon inside. Wild dragons will hatch only when they sense it is safe, and can remain in their egg if it is not safe. Dragons given to the elves and dedicated to be riders will only hatch when their chosen rider is nearby. Dragons will live forever, only death by wounds or sickness would befall them. At six months they gain fire breathing ability. They are naturally predators, but will sometimes eat plants, such as Fireweed. When a bound dragon’s rider dies, they will rampage, avenging their death and most commonly, die of grief soon after. The dragons have a heart or hearts, the Eldunari which can retain their consciousness.
